Baseball lore

Posted on: September 24th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

Ouch!  Baseballs most memorable blunder!  Can you imagine going through the rest of your life knowing the entire world will never remember anything else that you’ve ever done but make a major mistake.  Can you imagine that.

October 25, 1986: Baseball has plenty of heroes, but Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner’s failure to field a routine ground ball in the 1986 World Series unfortunately makes him the one of the game’s all-time goats. With a comfortable 5-3 lead in the bottom of the 10th in Game 6 (and a series lead of 3-2), Boston allows the Mets to tie it up. Mookie Wilson’s ground ball to first looks like the game will go to the 11th, but Buckner (playing on bad ankles) lets the ball roll between his legs as the winning run scores. It not only propels the Mets to an improbable Game 6 victory, but opens the door for them to win the Series in seven. “It’s a shame that Buckner, who was a very fine player for many years,” says John Thorn, the MLB’s official historian, “is now remembered for one play.”

One of my favorite memories is this one with Rick Monday.  You gotta love it!

April 25, 1976: Rick Monday was a US Marine for 6 years, which made him uniquely qualified to be patrolling center field for the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Stadium on April 25, 1976. Monday noticed two protesters in left-centerfield, preparing to burn the American flag. He swooped over and snatched the flag from them. ”I was angry when I saw them start to do something to the flag, and I’m glad that I happened to be geographically close enough to do something about it,” Monday told the Washington Post.

Later in 1976, Dodgers exec Al Campanis gave the flag to Monday. He still has it—as well as a place as a real American hero. ”I know the people were very pleased to see Monday take the flag away from those guys,” Manny Mota, who played with Monday, told the Post. “I know Rick has done a lot of good things as a player and as a person. But what he did for his country, he will be remembered for the rest of his life as an American hero.”

More great moments in baseball history to follow.

Baseball’s best time of year and finest moments

Posted on: September 23rd, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

I love basball and every year around this time I cannot wait for the playoffs to start.  Of all the major sporting events in the US The World Series is the best for me.  Much better than the Super Bowl, The NBA finals, The Masters and anything related to tennis, horse racing.  The World Series rules the roost for me.

But, what are some of the most memorable play and players in baseball history?  Lets take a look.

October 18, 1977: “Any moment that can create a nickname is amazing,” says Richard Puerzer, a member of the Society for American Baseball Research. It was during Game 6 of the 1977 World Series that Reggie Jackson got his. In the fourth inning, Jackson hit the first pitch he saw from Dodgers starter Burt Hooten into the right field seats. In the fifth, Jackson lined reliever Elias Sosa’s first offering to about the same spot. And in the eighth, Jackson smacked Charlie Hough’s first pitch, a knuckleball, 475 feet into dead center field.

Reggie certainly is one of the best players in history but is especially great in the World Series.  You don’t get a nickname that sticks like this unless great things happen.

August 19, 1951: Bill Veeck, the St. Louis Browns owner and baseball’s greatest promoter, created one of the game’s iconic images when he signed 3-foot-7-inch Eddie Gaedel to a contract and sent him to bat as a pinch hitter. “The picture itself is so hilarious,” says Neil Lanctot, author of three books on baseball, including Campy: The Two Lives of Roy Campanella. “Gaedel looks like he’s really ready to hit.” Gaedel, whose strike zone measured all of one-and-a-half feet, walked on four pitches and twice tipped his cap to the crowd before being lifted for a pinch runner.

The Cubs and the White Sox are both eliminated from the playoffs this year but it should be exciting to watch the playoffs, once again.

I’ll post more memorable photo’s and baseball stories throughout the playoffs.

Fall fashion from around the web

Posted on: September 6th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

Fall has arrived and it’s official.  Cool weather and really cool nights are the clear indication that you can start moving your summer clothes to the back of your closet and bring your fall fashions to the front.  The change from summer to fall wasn’t even subtle this year.  It was almost overnight as last week it was so hot I had the air conditioner on and this weekend I had all the windows closed because the temperature at night dropped to 42 degrees.  Wow!

Fall is the best time of year for fashion because there’s so much more you can do with your look.  Add an overcoat and dress shoes along with long trousers and socks.  The jeans become darker and the sweaters are comfortable.

Burberry gave us some really good looks this year and I like the fact that your look can pull double duty in more ways than one and is not just a buzz word.  The master designer has gone back a few years and recreated the double breasted overcoat that you can dress up and down.  I like that because I always follow the great designers and then try and incorporate the look in my own way.  I would definitely wear this coat with jeans and a great pair of shoes.  At Arrowsmith Shoes we are always trying to combine great fashion with stunning footwear because all of it has to flow together.

I love this look because it’s extremely young and all worn in a casual way. None of these coats are worn over a suit and I think that more and more I’d love wearing and overcoat as they can be a cool thing to wear on the weekend. If you won’t try the double-breasted suit, the double-breasted coat is a cool thing because once you button it up, it keeps you twice as warm.

The important thing for a double-breasted coat is it has to fit right.  Actually all your clothing needs o fit right to look good.

Here’s a second look that’s perfect for fall work or weekend days.  I love this look and Michael Bastian does a fantastic job putting everything together on a budget.  I would think that if you’re into fashion you can probably pull this look together right from your closet.

The bold stripes in the sweater and the grey tweed jacket are fantastic together and the look is stylish and comfortable.  You have many options to wear for a shirt or a belt and your choices for shoes are endless.

One of the things you have to think about is that materials and fit are key trends this season.  Make sure everything fits well because that tells the world that dressing well is important to you.  At least it’s a mature mans way of dressing.  Style and trend watching isn’t hard but it is time consuming but if you need help just ask one of the stylist at Arrowsmith Shoes.

Map My Ride

Posted on: August 15th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

The fall and school season is upon us now and if you’re like me spending time on your bicycle is more than just a summer fun thing to do.  I use my bike for just about everything travel related in the fall as my car is only used on the weekends.  I recently purchased a beautiful Trek 7.2 FX and retired my old Raleigh by giving it to my nephew.  It served me well for many years.  However, my new Trek is completely fantastic and “reasonably” priced at $549.  It’s still a financial bite but since I have all the other accessories, that’s my only cost and this bike will last a very long time.

I researched several bikes in this price range such as the Cannondale Quick 4 and Quick 5 as well as other well known names but found the Trek to be the one that fit my lifestyle the best.  Believe me, all the bikes were fantastic and it was a tough choice as each had features I liked and all the prices were within $50 of each other.  For me bikes are not like cars where I need the perfect color and all the right stuff before I make my purchase.  I need it to do what I need it to do and everything else is secondary.  Plus, I’m afraid that if it draws too much attention because of how “beautiful” it looks someone will steal it no matter what lock I use.  I half think to myself that I should beat it up right after I buy it so it looks old and unassuming, but I would never do that this incredible machine.  Wow!

This summer my wife and I really used our bikes and we joined Map My Ride.  I strongly suggest to anyone who likes to go for bike rides, stop for lunch and explore as well as riding on vacation to join this site.  Don’t worry, it’s FREE but you can upgrade to different plans on the site if you want to but it’s not necessary.  We mapped many rides and had a blast riding and going on mini adventures and we mapped a few rides with some friends as well.

What I like about Hybrid bikes is that you can load them up with all kinds of goodies.  I added a kick stand to my Trek and I already had a quick on/off rack for the back.  You can buy a little carry case for shoes, swim trunks and towels, snacks and all sorts of smaller but useful items.  I never thought I would be the guy who had a bike rack but this summer we used it on every ride and we were gone all day at times.  We rode our bikes to art fairs and farmers markets as well as some longer rides in northern Wisconsin on a short vacation. I did all this on my Raleigh and now that I have the Trek it will be even better.  My wife has a UniVega Hybrid and it’s fantastic as well.

The only thing I bought along with my Trek was a better pair of riding gloves.  My old gloves had seen their day.

What shoes are best with no socks

Posted on: July 8th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

This iconic summer look first came into style during the 1950s, when loafers were popular among men on vacation who wanted a break from their city shoes. It has stayed popular since then, and bare ankles are still one of our favorite ways to express casual ease in warmer weather.

To accomplish this, choose a pair of shoes that don’t come up too high on your foot: drivers, deck shoes and loafers are all a natural choice, as their low profile and long foot opening will expose the right part of your ankle and create harmony with rolled jean cuffs or a tailored pair of chino shorts. For a new office outfit, select a pair of oxfords or bucks that fall low on your heel. Wearing these sans socks, along with a lightweight suit and a colorful tie, will transition sartorial style into summer. With all of these options, keep color in mind: Tanned ankles are preferable over bright white ones—and few things look better with a tan than rich brown leather in shades ranging from light gold to deep mahogany.

Enjoy the summer!

Summer Fashion Update

Posted on: June 6th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

The Dressy Sport Jacket
A sports coat is something you really need to have in your summer wardrobe. You might be thinking “but what kind of pants do I wear with it?” Here’s the answer to that problem. You want the pants to be dressed to the jacket. So, if you have a pale tobacco jacket, go for a dark pant. If you have a dark jacket, opt for a lighter pant. In other words, if you’re trying to match the color value of the jacket, you’re heading in the wrong direction. The great thing about sports jackets this season too is that they’re much more structured and elegant than they have been in the past. If you work in a more casual office setting, you can definitely rock this to work instead of a suit.

“Doing your own thing as long as its classy is how you should look at most things.  The days of hard and fast fashion trends have gone by the wayside.” ~ Ari Schenk, designer

The Woven Belt
So a few years ago we really told guys to go for the confident no-belt look. The good thing about a belt though is that it’s a finishing touch, like a pocket square is for a business look. Woven belts give an outfit some rugged authenticity. They have some casual attitude and for that reason are more of a summer accessory. Don’t worry about matching the color of the leather to your shoes. They look great with a pair of Jack Purcell’s or a pair of beat up boots. Buy one a little bigger. When the tail hangs down a little bit, it gives you some swagger. The other great thing about a braided belt: you don’t have to worry if your waistline expands!

No Tie? No Problem
This trend definitely has its roots in the 80s. Think Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman in Rainman. It’s totally clean, modern, and minimalist. Everyone from Patrik Ervell and Jil Sander to Simon Spurr pulled it off on the runway. Buttoning that top bottom gives you a little fashion edge. You can do it with a suit or just with a shirt. In that case, try rolling the sleeves up.

Everybody wants to be Jordan. . .

Posted on: June 5th, 2011 by rpgadmin 3 Comments

. . . but nobody wants to be Larry Bird, until now!  Dirk Nowitzki from the Dallas Mavericks is down-right-no-holds-barred AWESOME!  You can find other words to describe his level of play but they had better be similar or you’re not watching the same player that I am.  Rebounding, shooting, assisting, leadership and focus.  The Heat had better figure out a way to stop this guy’s “determination” or they can kiss this season good night.  I say determination because when you’re down 15 points half way through the fourth quarter and come back to win you have an attitude that’s dangerous, lethal and infectious.  I can hardly wait to watch tonights game.

Last thursday night was one of the best games of basketball I have ever watched and I’ve been a fan of the NBA for decades.  I’ve seen Bird, Magic and “His Airness” play unbelievable games and now I feel as though you have to include Nowitzki when you mention great players from the past.  Wow!  I can easily do that.  He has upstaged King James, who’s a great player mind you, but. . . !  When it’s all said and done the great “teams” of the past had Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan who won three, five, and six championships respectively.  Is it unfair to compare a 6’9” Bird to a 7′ Nowitzki?  Not really!

The is one of the few times in the past decade or so when a Larry Bird comparison comes into play.  You never hear that.  Kids grow up today dreaming of being the next Michael Jordan but have you ever heard of a kid growing up telling you he wants to be the next Larry Bird, or even Magic Johnson?  Never!  Nowitzki is an agile and crazy driven center who is playing with a torn tendon in his left hand was loud and angry at team mates in time out huddles and was pointing his finger demanding they play harder.  Wow I say again.  You don’t see that very often in today’s NBA.

Nowitzki knows he has to play both offense and defense in a flawless manner.  The Heat’s offense is more unreliable. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are one-on-one players who get to the rim and rely on a referee’s whistle. What if the ref doesn’t blow the whistle? What if they can’t get to the rim and have to rely on their jump shots?  The Heat act like offense doesn’t matter.

Nowitzki is an old-school player of the past (or at least he thinks like them) and when you study history in the NBA the old school players win far more rings than the flash in the pan Jordan wannabe’s.

We’ll see what happens.

Elway. . . ! I love it

Posted on: May 28th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

A recent report written for Yahoo stated that with the NFL lockout in full swing, John Elway must really be bored.  Somehow Elway — the Denver Broncos vice president and Hall-of-Fame quarterback — became aware of the Fort Collins, Colo., punk band “Elway,” and decided he’s just not cool with the group using his surname.  The Broncos legend’s lawyer has requested that the band change its name, but stopped short of suing or issuing a cease and desist order.  The band, to its credit, was mostly amused. In a statement released via punknews.org, the band acknowledged the letter and suggested Elway had better things to do in the wake of the Broncos’ disastrous 2010 season.

“We have no intention of changing the name again. We love the name, regardless of what connotations are inferred by the listener. Surely, if the Dead Kennedys could become one of punk’s most popular bands without incurring litigation, Elway can keep their moniker and continue making so-so music for our dozens of fans to enjoy.”  ~Elway

That’s funny stuff!  Score a point for Elway — the band, that is. And now the group has now received more press than it ever would have had Elway minded his own business. This is also a marketing lesson, John.  Never, ever, pick a fight with someone small and insignificant because when you do that you raise them to your level and it never turns out the way you want it to.

There have to be quite a few people perusing the band’s MySpace site, rocking out to songs like “Wolf Shirt,” but, I have to add that I’m not a punk rock fan so it could be a great song but I don’t see it.

Anyway, it’s better than anything Elway or his team have produced in the last year. Maybe he’s jealous.

Dennis Rodman has his number retired

Posted on: May 10th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

Dennis Rodman is our kind of guy.  I say that tongue in cheek as the gals in the office are not so sure.  Rodman was a Detroit Piston before he became a Chicago Bull and I believe he is one of the most underrated players in NBA history.  Now that the Bulls are tearing up the finals paying tribute to Dennis Rodman seemed appropriate and timely.

Sure, he’s a weird guy and definitely walks to the beat of a different drum but you cannot deny his skill under the boards.  He was a rebounding machine and if you follow Pat Riley’s three “R’s”advice on how to win championships “rebound, rebound, rebound” Rodman was the guy to have on your team.

Just recently a Detroit Gentleman’s Club retired his number and will hang it on the wall inside the club.  I  don’t know how much money you have to spend at a club to have your number retired but if you know anything about  Rodman, I’m sure it was plenty.  Way to go Dennis!

The grey jean option. . . !

Posted on: April 4th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

Recently, we’ve been posting some important tips on choosing the best style of jean for the spring and summer. However, we tend to look at jeans as an item you can wear all year long and have a hard time believing that you need a huge wardrobe of jeans.

Granted there is a summer jean and a winter jean but that doesn’t mean you’re limited to one or the other based on the season. Summer jeans are definitely thinner by a couple of points so wearing them in the hot weather makes sense. But I wear winter jeans in warm weather, especially at night.

Gray jeans can easily be your go-to jean this summer as the trend for this color has become popular all over Europe and in London. In most cases they’re more than a little worn and washed and you can get them in different weights so you can bring them out in the fall and winter. The beauty here is that gray goes with everything!

We have a complete jean report and you and it shows that you can easily wear almost any kind of footwear with gray jeans. I like a trendy sneaker or a carmel slip on with gray as its trendier than most things you would think to wear with jeans. You can also role up the cuffs and go on a day trip or off to the country.

Tommy Ton in Paris

Posted on: March 29th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

This year at Paris Fashion week, Tommy Ton has been on the loose capturing street scenes from the city of Lights. Ton is even more famous since I reported on him last year and he now shoots and assists style editors for fashion magazines, designers and big name stores and boutiques. Stylists pay him big bucks to capture real images from real people and then they design their clothing labels around fact and not a guess.

Every big fashion show has a special seat for Ton and he has improved his equipment to a $30,000 Hasselblad camera. Nice! Most photographers have to rent them but not Ton. He can afford the really good stuff.

Above you’ll see some of what Paris Fashion Week looked like and what kind of street scenes Ton will photograph. Just about everything he shoots has people in the shot and all of us at Arrowsmith Shoes have been following Tom Ton for quite some time. We use his images to help in our buying so you get the ‘what’s-happening-now-look’ and your wardrobe is up to date and stylish.

Stay tuned for more on Paris Fashion Week.

The Denim Guide. . .

Posted on: March 28th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

Denim for men has gone the way of the ‘skinny.’ Well, sort of. I’m not a fan of skinny jeans for men but I have to say that some of these jeans are pretty nice and I can get used to the look depending on how you style them. These jeans really accentuate the footwear. This pair by J. Crew is one of the most reasonably priced, best-fitting selvage options on the market. Seriously, any guy looks studly in these and they can be dressed up or down just as easily. This is not a true skinny but a straight leg jean, which I like. $225 at J. Crew.

Winner for Best Name for a Fit Ever goes to denim obsessive Brandon Svarc of Naked & Famous. this jean is called the “WeirdGuy” which I don’t really understand but what do I know. It’s got a tapered leg

with a little more give up top. Perfect if you like a skinny jean but still want to have kids one day. Not perfect if you’re looking for something on the lighter side. These are jeans with some serious, ‘bulletproofish’ heft and they’re priced at only $135. Here’s a great style that looks fantastic with this jean.

The essential Montauk-y vacation jean without the baggy fit you generally associate with sandy locales. With just the right mix of holes and abrasions, this vintage wash is specifically perfect for the warmer months. And, yes, it’s another you should flash a little ankle with I love this jean and it’s only $69.00. I love this jean and it looks great with all kinds of casual footwear.

I hope you like some of these styles as I think you can easily fit them into your lifestyle.

Otis Redding – One very cool guy

Posted on: March 8th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

Black History Month paid tribute to many past performing artists and their incredible contributions to the world. And, for anyone who’s curious, cool and stylish was probably invented by the likes of Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Junior and just about anyone who went to the Cotton Club. Black History Month was started 80 years ago so Arrowsmith Shoes thought it would be cool to mention it here in the popular blog.

Style is a inner thing and cool is an observation by others. Some people think they’re cool but those people are so obviously not cool that it just doesn’t work at all. Some people are naturally cool and you can instantly tell by the large crowd of people that usually hang around them. The first thing you notice when you see someone is how they’re dressed and the first impression you have of them is probably correct. You think cool or not cool. At least that’s what I do.

Who was cooler than Otis Redding (above). He played music and had that voice and probably never worked a day job in his life. He looked cool and he dressed cool because he knew he was cool and it worked for him. He wasn’t faking it. Tragically, on December 10, 1967 on a cold and foggy day, he was killed when a small airplane he was riding in crashed into Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin killing him, his manager, the pilot and four members of his band. There was one survivor, Ben Cauley who was also a band member. Otis was 26 years old at the time. The plane crashed about 100 yards off shore and urban folklore that still lives today was that a brief case full of cash was never discovered. Even in death, Otis Redding was cool. Sitting on the dock of the bay was recorded three days before Redding died.

So in honor of Black History Month, all of us would like to give a nod and a toast to one of the coolest and most stylish person ever, Otis Redding.

Spring styles for 2011

Posted on: March 7th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

It’s that time of year again and I have spring fever so bad I can hardly stand it and, as usual, I hate everything in my closet. This happens to me every year when the weather starts to get warmer and the days get longer.

Right about now I feel like changing my hair style or think about getting a tattoo and this is what happens to people when they live in a cold climate like Chicago. As much as I love the four seasons the winter doldrums hit me the hardest.

I do like my selection of ties this year as the trend didn’t change too much from last year. Bright colorful ties were all over London Fashion Week and when I saw the Tommy Ton pics I was pleasantly surprised.. I have a lot of what is shown on the streets of London and I’m a huge fan of Tommy Ton. Plaid ties are cool and they’re fun. You’re not straying too far from the terminally dull styles of everyday men and you’re not trying to shock even the trendy by wearing them You can wear a plaid tie almost anywhere and feel right at home.

What I saw this year is about a new generation of plaid ties that will add a refreshing hit of vibrant color to the suits you wear to the office week in and week out. The secret? Deeper, richer, darker colors. That’s easy! Even if you don’t have deeper richer colors softer tones will work perfect.

What I like about plaid ties is that you can wear a stylish colored shirt with pockets and casual trousers or you can wear them with jeans. If you dare, depending on the material of the tie, you can wear it under a vest with a three piece suit.

When you think of plaid try to make sure that plaid is plaid and let everyone know that its plaid. Let’s see it. Ralph Lauren made a gazillion dollars with plaid and he ought to know style if anyone does, so wear plaid in all kinds of combinations.

When a man loves a woman. . .

Posted on: February 14th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

Hi everyone! When writing about Valentines Day I wanted to add my two cents in on the best and most romantic love story that was made into a movie. It should also be noted that when it comes to love stories Meg Ryan seems to be the woman everyone wants for the female lead. She’s as cute as can be and just has that ‘love story’ quality that I enjoy in movies. If you think not too hard by the way you can rattle off some of the more romantic comedies she’s been in. French Kiss, When Harry Met Sally, You’ve got mail and the list goes on and on.

I love this story and every woman who watches will love it to so guys, if you want a romantic movie to watch on Valentines day, rent this one.

The story revolves around Andy Garcia who’s an airline pilot and his wife are forced to face the consequences of her alcoholism when her addictions threaten her life and their daughter’s safety. While the Meg Ryan enters detox, her husband must face the truth of his enabling behavior. He loves her so much even with all her problems. I could cry just writing this blog.

If you want to surprise the woman you love with a dinner and a movie kind of night rent this movie and watch what happens.

Love songs and . . . ,

Posted on: February 9th, 2011 by rpgadmin No Comments

This Monday is Valentines Day and for me personally, it’s one for the record books. For some reason I’ve had three men in less than a week ask me out on dates and for me, that never happens. As a “non girly girl,” I don’t get asked out as much as I like because I always seem to attract men who are only interested in girly girls. By ‘girly girl’ I mean the lipstick, perfume wearing girls who get all dressed up to go to the health club. That isn’t me. Not by a long shot!

I love to be romanced, however and my last boyfriend was very romantic and would sing songs and send me cards and flowers. We no longer date because he was transferred to Florida for his job after graduating and the long distance thing just didn’t work very well. Actually, it didn’t work at all.

One of the fun things I remember was that we used to play old love songs and create play list of love songs that we would put on a CD and listen to them in the car when taking love trips. We would sing them like we wrote them and the Paul McCartney song above was one of them. Listening to it now makes me sad and I hope the date I have likes musice. Nothing brings out love like a love song.

Save me a spot!

Posted on: January 28th, 2011 by rpgadmin 1 Comment

As taken from the repoters article in the Milwaukee Journal.

This job affords me some incredible opportunities. Being a member of the FOX 6 Sports team means I’ve been able to witness and report on events and people that many can only admire from a distance. I never take these situations for granted and sincerely appreciate being involved in whatever capacity each permits.

Monday marked just the most recent case as I had the unparalleled privilege to be a part of Aaron Rodgers charity event to benefit the MACC Fund, a charity towards eradicating childhood cancer and blood disorders.

Scattered throughout the crowd of rabid Packers aficionados, were the people who I consider the event’s real MVPs. They are the families who’ve been forced to deal with one of life’s toughest sentences – the loss of a child.

Those who sprung for the tickets were not disappointed. In a world where many athletes regurgitate canned and rehearsed responses, the Packers quarterback was refreshingly candid. Aaron addressed a number of topics with in-depth, honest reaction – even some that if reprinted and mass distributed might raise some eyebrows.
Aaron stressed the importance of availability and accountability. In his opinion, it is a player’s responsibility to attend all of the team activities as they are all intended to better the team as a whole. And then, similarly, he addressed the importance of taking the heat/criticism when one falls short of expectations and duties.

He is never nervous to take the field. Aaron is supremely confident in the preparation he’s put in during the week leading up to Sunday’s match up. The way the 2009 season ended was disappointing, but his self-confidence was not affected by the outcome. One of the toughest realizations was that that combination of players would never take the field together again. He likened the team to a family and admitted that conflict can and does occasionally exist, but they try to handle such situations with maturity and civility.

He talked music and his love for tunes at a young age revealing that his mom used to sing and play lullabies and country music when he was a child. Aaron’s record label Suspended Sunrise is a product of this passion, but also a contingency plan for life after football. His favorite song is Ben Harper’s ‘Forever’ and he’s envious of John Mayer’s guitar skills though not his tabloid reputation. He appreciated my affinity for Keith Urban, but gave the audience a thumbs-down when I mentioned fellow country crooner Kenny Chesney.

His favorite book is The Bible and he tries to read it every day, not just when life’s challenges and struggles surface.

His favorite movie is The Princess Bride which he admits he’s caught flack for but says he and his childhood friends can recite every line from the film and it is simply a great story.

Rodgers’ answers to questions on this night were certainly admirable. And I honestly didn’t think I could respect Aaron more. But I was wrong.

My friend, the father of that young girl who passed, was there that night. He was one of several attendees brought up on stage where he caught a football thrown by the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers.

He asked Aaron to sign the football he’d caught. He wondered if he’d make it out to his daughter. It isn’t shocking that Rodgers obliged. What caught me off guard was the dedication he made. It wasn’t until after Aaron left that I first saw the autograph.. and the simple yet sweet message that brought tears to this father’s eyes:

“To Cheri the angel. Save me a spot. – Aaron Rodgers”

I hope that Packers fans realize how lucky they are to have such an upstanding young man leading their team on the field every weekend. I hope they appreciate the challenges that were thrust upon him and acknowledge the maturity with which he handled them. I hope they stand behind the kid and respect him not only for his incredible talent, but for his intelligence and honesty, poise and compassion.

My job has afforded me the chance to watch Aaron Rodgers play football for the last few seasons. But I am truly thankful for the opportunity to see the other side of this impressive young man. And pass on some of what I witnessed to you.

Go pack!
